When Alice Schlein and Bhakti Zeik’s book, The Woven Pixel, was published it kindled new fires in the weaving world, teaching weavers how to use powerful graphics software, Adobe Photoshop, to design drafts for jacquard looms. The technical jacquard content and the hefty price tag of $160, however, put it out of the reach of many weavers. Still, dobby weavers yearned to use the technique to design imagery for their looms.

Alice’s latest book, The Liftplan Connection, brings that wonderful design technique down to earth in a less expensive volume aimed specifically at dobby weavers. That and its inclusion of instructions for the consumer-priced Adobe Photoshop Elements make it accessible to a wider audience.

The book is wonderfully clear with step-by-step directions that walk you through the process of setting up Photoshop (either standard or Elements) for designing, creating fill patterns of weave drafts, and then how to take the designs from Photoshop to any of several weaving programs to turn it into a weavable WIF file.

Instructions are included for both Windows and Mac, and both versions of Photoshop. The book’s instructions are so thorough that you don’t need a lot of experience with Photoshop to follow along. In fact, working through the book, I felt like I’d also gotten a mini-course in Photoshop in addition to weave design.

One of the highlights of the book for me was its step-by-step explanation of how to create woven text. Another was the chapter where Alice talks about how to design edges and borders so the cloth becomes a piece, not just patterned yardage.

One of the drawbacks of writing a book about using software is that software changes so rapidly. This book was published in 2010, and there’s already new versions of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements released. I test-drove the book using Photoshop Elements 9 (for Mac) and although the book was written for Photoshop Elements 6, I had no trouble following the directions. (Fortunately, Adobe is a company that doesn’t drastically change its user interface between versions.)

If you have a computer dobby loom, and are interested in learning how to create your own weave drafts, this is a book you need in your library. It’s that good.

Warning: if you don’t have a computer dobby loom, reading this book may inspire desperate yearnings for one.

Thanks a lot for this excellent post. I bought this book last and let me tell you people that it’s a wonder piece. When compared to other books like The Woven Pixel, this one is so cheap and the instructions are so clear with step-by-step directions. Adobe Photoshop Elements have made things easier, if you could find some concord supplies you could take the prints of the designs and work better with those. I strongly recommend this book to all weavers, specifically the dobby weavers. Can someone here help me with an e-book version of this one???
