Write for WeaveZine

Thank you for your interest in contributing to WeaveZine. We are an online publication with an emphasis on fun, inspiring, weaving articles and projects. New designers are encouraged to send us work; we’d love to be your first publication.

What are We Looking For?

WeaveZine wants informative and entertaining articles and projects that are fun, beautiful, and inspiring. Extra credit if they are whimsical and/or break new ground in weaving. Double-extra credit for projects that do all of the above and are also approachable for new weavers and knitters. (Tip: these people rarely have floor looms.)

Projects and articles must be entirely your own work, without infringing on the copyrights or designs of others. In other words, “inspired by” is okay, plagiarism is not.

Note: Your submission must be unpublished. This means that it can’t have previously appeared in a book, magazine, Web site, blog, or social-networking site such as Ravelry, Facebook, Weavolution, etc.

Submission Deadlines

The deadline for article submissions is the 15th of the month prior to publication.  This means that if you are submitting an article for March, it would need to be in by February 15th.

Payment

WeaveZine currently pays $25 per featured article.

In addition, your work will be featured in a professionally produced publication read by thousands of weavers all over the world.  It's a great way to get your name out there and be seen.

All authors are given space at the bottom of the page for a 50-75 bio, and you are welcome to promote your website and/or online store in this area.

Where to Send Submissons

Online submissions are preferred, and will get the quickest response. Send text, image files, and WIFs or Fiberworks DTX files (if available) to the WeaveZine YouSendIt drop box.  This is a website that makes it easy to send large files over the Internet.  You can use the page to send multiple files via the "Add another file" link on the YouSendIt page.

Postal submissions should be sent to:

WeaveZine Editor
Post Office Box 860
North Bend, WA 98045

Submission Format

  1. Please include your contact information on all submissions.  (Name, address, phone, email, Web site, etc.)

  2. Text should be sent as a Word document, or text file.  Please indicate where in the file the photos should go.  A line such as "[PHOTO[01_threadingthereed.jpg]" is very helpful.  I prefer that you do not embed photos in a Word document.

In your write up, please tell the story of your project. Not just the how, but the why. Readers like to know what made you want to weave this project, or explore this technique.

  3. Projects should include warp and weft calculations, and if applicable, a WIF or Fiberworks PCW file. (If you do not have weaving software, you can scan or take a picture of the weave draft.)

  4. Are there any photos that would clarify and enhance the content of your article? Visuals can really bring a subject to life. Especially how-to articles.

Digital images should be at a minimum 72 dpi in resolution and at least 560 pixels wide. Larger is better, I actually prefer photos 1-2MB in size, because it gives me more options when formatting your pictures for the web. If saving as a JPEG, please use the best possible quality.

Photos should be clear, and show off the item to best advantage. Daryl Lancaster has written an excellent article about how to photograph textiles effectively: Photographing Your Work.

Feel free to get creative with how you photograph your work, keeping in mind that readers will want to know (a) what the item is, (b) its handle, and (c) what the fabric looks like close up. Submitting multiple photos is encouraged.

  5. Include the names of models appearing in the photos (if any) as well as photo credits (if you are not the photographer.)

  6. All submissions should include a 50-75 word bio blurb and author photo. If you have a personal Website or blog you'd like to promote, please include the URL.
