Teach Someone To Weave

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

What a wonderful opportunity for me to share my good fortune.  I was asked to teach weaving for one week.  At first, we agreed on 7 - 9 students.  After a morning talk (where many attended) on the Acadian cloth, I had so many asking it they could take the workshop.  We filled the room with 20 looms.

One young girl came to me and asked if I thought she could weave.  She was born with her left arm to the elbow.  "YES!" If you want to learn, you will learn.  I am so fortunate to have had that time with her.  She learnt to throw the shuttle and weave beautiful cloth.  She even double hemstitched the cloth.

Next...I was asked to teach a spinning workshop.  It was cotton for one half the week and flax, the other.  Again, the same young lady asked.  We giggled because at first she was spinning rope.  By the end of the week, she was spinning linen measuring 16/1.

This has been humbling beyond word description.  I am grateful to have been asked to teach.  In June, I return to teach for 2 weeks...spinning and weaving.

Should you want more from me, please ask.  I hate to ramble on and on as to what a wonderful adventure this is.  By the end of the week of weaving...45 Acadian towels had been woven by 20 in the class.  They were all so lovely and beautiful.  I couldn't believe my eyes as these ladies had never thrown a shuttle...nor did they know how to warp a loom.

Again Syne, thank you for this chance to share my incredible journey...Charlotte Lindsay Allison
