My Secret Weapon
I love the planet: I recycle, I compost, I wander around a 60-degree house all winter in a sweater to conserve electricity.
But after three days of waiting, I've had to face an unpleasant truth.
In the Pacific Northwest, the thirty skeins I handpainted for an upcoming rigid-heddle class at the John C. Campbell Folk School aren't going to get dry on their own. After three days of hanging in my bathroom, they're still damp to the touch.
Fortunately, I have a secret weapon.

When our dryer died a few years back, I researched all the options and features that were on the market and discovered an amazing innovation: the shoe dryer. It's a shelf that fits into your dryer and creates a non-rotation platform on which you can put things. Said things then get engulfed in gales of hot air and dry quickly without tangling, er...making a big thumping noise.
I told Eric I'd picked the best option for our replacement dryer. Unless he reads this, he'll never know what the deciding factor was. ;>
I feel a bit guilty about the energy usage; when I lived in Florida, things hung outside dried within hours. On the other hand, up here I don't run an A/C in the summer, so I guess there are some compensations.
And it's a heck of a lot better than the time I spent the night before a class blow-drying skeins in my hotel room with a hair dryer...

Spiffy justification
What a great option... I've never heard of that before. I certainly would be happy with a non-thumping dryer.
Great idea.
Dryer Envy
Even if I had a 'proper' tumble dryer I would never be able to fit a clever gadget like that in the teeny-tiny things we have over here... I'm trying to feel good about my default contribution to matters ecological, but deep down I WANT ONE OF THOSE!

If you spin them out in your
If you spin them out in your washer, they will be dry in a jiff. I've dyed skeins in the afternoon, rinsed and spun them out at night, hung them on a rack, and they've been completely dry by late the next morning. Put them in net bags so they don't get tangled under the agitator. The quick washer spin will use a lot less energy than the dryer. And yes, I do live in the PNW! ;-)
secret weapon...
Please don't feel bad about using the dryer to dry your skeins --- the new dryers are so much more energy efficient - and the amount of time that you used it does not compare to doing loads of laundry.
That drying shelf is great for ball caps, the felt liners from winter boots, the lsit goes on....but the important thing is that you didn't let those people down
A great tip, and yet...
That's a great tip! Thanks for mentioning it.
Actually, I do make use of my washer that way. I live, however, in a rural area that gets on average 60 more inches of rain a year than Seattle. (If you've ever been to the Hoh rainforest...we have a lot of the same mosses growing where I live.) It is way damp here. So even with centrifuging out water, it can take days to dry, alas.
But still, a great tip!
colour
Those are brilliant colours, what sort of dyes did you use? Great gadget too.

The Shoe Dryer?
OMG! I have the same dryer, and that funny rack hangs off the side, I've never used it because, duh, I didn't read the directions and figure out what it was for! Boy do I feel stupid! I live in the northeast, so unless it is a miserable humid day in the summer, most things dry pretty quickly. I can't wait to dye some skeins and try out my 'shoe dryer'!

Many people who run image blogs are photographers by trade, but photo blogging is also very popular among hobbyists and amateur shutterbugs. To be certain, a lot of the most popular photo blogs have gained attention because the pictures on them are of the highest artistic caliber, and a lot of the people who run these striking blogs are graduates of prestigious art schools and have impressive professional portfolios. However, some of the most well known and most often visited photo blogs are as notable for their concepts as for the pictures themselves. Certain photo blogs, like the popular "Cute Overload" which features picture after picture of adorable animals, are more about the thematic content of the pictures than they are about the style in which the snapshots are taken.
